Geotechnical Engineering Superintendent

Responsibilities :

Reporting to the Mining manager, the GES will manage and coordinate the provision of an effective geotechnical service for sub­ surface and open pit mining operations across the Mana Mining site.

The incumbent is :

• Accountable for the management and adherence of the Safety, Health, Environment and Community (SHEC) policies and procedures in area of responsibility.
• Enforce the company's SHEC policy and code of conduct and ensure they are adhered to by all staff, suppliers, and contractors;
• Enforce and monitor compliance with Mana Mine SHEC policies and procedures by subordinate staff, take remedial action and report all incidents and accidents, following established procedures;
• Develop the medium- to long-term geotechnical plan  aligned  with  business  objectives,  best  practice,  and  the production plan ;
• Formulate ground control management strategies and update, review and enforce the Ground Control Management Plan ;
• Review annual and LOM plans to advise on the safest mining sequence using numerical modelling ;
• Coordinate and review geotechnical design and analysis for sub-surface excavations ;
• Design and monitoring of the stability of rib pillars and crown pillars ;
• Develop ground support systems using engineered rock mechanics principles ;
• Complete performance analysis,  using  various  geotechnical  engineering  software  or  otherwise  for  sub-surface excavations and  underground mine structures ;
• Implement geotechnical systems and procedures in the operation ;
• Evaluate the rock mechanics of mining areas through  the study of models,  designs,  and  processes to  optimize ore extraction ;
• Conduct ongoing audits of ground support conditions to ensure compliance with company standards and procedures.
• Conduct underground site inspections, ensuring ground control management programs are in place and maintained in line with geotechnical best practice and standards.
• Ensure all fall and that corrective actions are implemented.
• Design and monitoring compliance to the Geotechnical Design for all open pit mining operations.
• Responsible for the utilization of allocated funds and resources to enable the achievement of geotechnical objectives.
• Provides on-the-job training for subordinate staff, monitors behaviour, and takes necessary remedial action, including recommending disciplinary action, in line with laid down policies and procedures.
• Proposes and implements staff development and training programs for the area of responsibility to ensure a competent, efficient, and motivated staff.
• of ground occurrences and ground support failures are thoroughly investigated, documented. 
• Provides technical guidance and coaching to subordinate staff and recommends subordinate staff for training.
• Coach, mentor and develop individual and team capability.

Requirements :

• Minimum B.Sc.  Hon degree in Engineering Geology or Geotechnical Engineering
• Minimum of 15 - 20 years’ relevant experience in an underground mining environment
• Experience in an Open Stopping (pit) Mining environment will be highly advantageous
• Experience in the installation and data analysis of underground extensometers
• Experience in Map3D numerical model building and analysis
• Experience in Ground Probe slope monitoring radar data analysis
• Experience in Open Pit Geotechnical Design and Analysis will be advantageous
• Proven experience in geotechnical design analysis using relevant software and application of recognized empirical methods
